Why is it so important to have no raw edges?
Covered seams are a classy touch that show my respect for the textiles I work with, and respect for the people who wear them. They are more comfortable against your skin.
I want the items I make to last for years. They should be supremely durable and able to withstand multiple launderings. By covering all the raw edges of the fabrics, I slow down the fraying process.
It is easy for a fabric to begin fraying at an edge, so by trapping all that rawness inside a seam, it is much harder for the threads to unravel. The agitation of wearing and washing can not get to the edge as easily.
Do you really make ALL this?
This is the question I most frequently hear when I do a popup shop or art fair. And the answer is yes, I do in fact make all this stuff. I even make my own tags.
Like many other creative people, I collect skills as if they were books in a library. When I see an interesting technique, or when I find a new tool at a thrift shop, I have to get in the studio and try it out. When the creative spark strikes, I can dip into my library of skills and create the thing I envisioned.
